The Kuvasz (koo-VAHSS) is one of the oldest known dog breeds on Earth — a living connection to the ancient world.
Descending from dogs who traveled west with Magyar nomadic tribes, the Kuvasz took root in the Carpathian Basin around the 9th century. The name derives from the Turkish kawasz — “armed guard of the nobility.”
King Matthias Corvinus of Hungary (1458–1490) trusted his Kuvasz more than his own palace guards. He kept packs at Visegrád Castle and gifted them to foreign dignitaries as a symbol of the highest respect.
For centuries, Kuvasz guarded livestock across Hungary's vast plains — not through brute force, but through calm authority and unwavering vigilance. That instinct runs just as deep today.
World War II nearly ended the Kuvasz entirely. Today, responsible breeders are the thread connecting this ancient breed to the future.
Occupying forces systematically eliminated the breed. Hungarian families sacrificed their own dogs rather than see them taken. A near-total collapse.
Out of more than 200 recognized breeds, the Kuvasz remains among the least common. Most people will never encounter one in their lifetime.
